| Pyllaucoediog
is a new private house, widely acclaimed for its sustainable, rural
design. |
| The
clients had approached us with an interesting problem. They had bought
a derelict stone barn in the middle of a marsh on the dark side of
a wood. It had planning permission to demolish and re-build as a banal
bungalow. Kedrick, a planning consultant (Carlisle Davies & North)
had negotiated with the planners to relocate the building to a more
healthy part of the site. The clients wanted a sustainable, contemporary
rural design. The planners wanted a barn. |
Our
solution was to produce a design based on the best energy conserving
aspects of vernacular design (using the topography for shelter, re-use
of materials) while employing today's energy conservation (orientation
for passive solar gain, insulation).
The contour-hugging plan shrugs off the weather and is reflected internally
as attractive split levels.
